We keep giving each other the look.

He came to live with us shortly after we bought our house. He was never very friendly- except with us. He had a rough life before we knew him. He doesn’t trust people. We weren’t sure how old he was, but there was no puppy left in him. He loved to go for walks and play in the backyard, but he usually found a comfortable place to lay when we were busy. The last few years our walks were getting shorter and shorter. This summer we just went around the block. Lately, it’s down to the end of the block and back on a good day.

We keep giving each other the look.

We’re both thinking the same thing, but neither one is ready to say it. We’ve both caught each other spending extra time with him, giving him extra treats. If we don’t say anything, it can’t be real. If we don’t say anything, we don’t have to tell Audrey.

We keep giving each other the look.
